i haven’t talked much about this subject on the blog, but for the past year i have been working with an acupuncturist (along with a western medicine doctor) to correct some hormonal imbalances, make my monthly female friend more regular, and prepare my body for baby. while matt and i are not pregnant (yet), we hope to start a family in the relatively near future and i wanted to be proactive in ensuring my body is in tip top shape when that happy time does arrive.

for the eastern medicine portion of my treatment plan, i have been seeing an acupuncturist, who specializes in female and fertility issues, one to two time per week. while i have not, up to this point, been prescribed chinese herbs (a common supplement to acupuncture treatment), i do follow her recommendation of a comprehensive vitamin supplement routine. each morning i take the following over the counter supplements:
- coenzyme q10
- vitamin a, c + e
- l’arginine
- dhea
- natural fish oil
over the past couple of months, i have noticed changes from the combination of acupuncture and daily supplements: more energy, sounder sleep, less aches + pains, and my hormones have returned to closer-to-ideal levels. this is not to say acupuncture (or western medicine for that matter) is a cure all (my body still struggles with certain “issues”), but i have most certainly seen improvement.

the detox
why do i tell you this? primarily it is background to introduce a program i will be embarking on for the next 10 days. under the supervision of my acupuncturist (and with the support of my primary care physician), beginning tomorrow, i will be following the metagenics ultra clear plus 10 day detox program.
before we get details of what it entails, a few notes:
- we are constantly exposed to toxins from both internal (bacterial and yeast naturally occurring in our bodies) and external external sources (pesticides in food, chemicals in water, that new car smell, etc.)
- detoxification is “the elimination of toxins from the body that we are exposed to externally from environmental sources and internally from products generated by the ongoing, normal daily cellular processes” {source}
- the purpose of this program (for me) is to cleanse and regenerate the processes within my body that nutritionally support its detoxification system (or its ability to rid itself of the toxins we all ingest each day.) theoretically this cleansing will allow my detoxification system to function more efficiently.
- this program is not a calorie-restrictive or food-devoid plan and is not used (in my case) for weight loss.

the details
this detox program is widely used by acupuncturists across the country and a comprehensive guide can be found here. in a nutshell, the 10 day program involves 3 phases:
- elimination phase
- day 1: eliminate refined sugars, caffeine, artificial colorings/flavorings/sweeteners and flesh foods (meat)
- day 2: eliminate dairy product and eggs
- day 3: eliminate gluten grains
- day 4: eliminate all grains, nuts and seeds
- detoxification phase
- days 5 – 7: eliminate all foods from days 1 through 4 as well as legumes. eat cruciferous vegetables, raw greens and fresh apples or pears
- reintroduction phase
- day 8: add back fruits, vegetables and white rice
- day 9: add back non-gluten grains, legumes and nuts
- day 10: slowly reintroduce those foods in your normal diet

the questions
initially i had the following concerns:
- what will i eat and how will i stay full?
easily! as you can see, up until day 4 i will continue to enjoy many of my current staples: vegetables, beans, quinoa, fruit and nuts (through day 3.) the hardest part of the elimination phase, for me, will be sugar (duh) and caffeine (bye bye morning misto!) i truly love vegetables, though, which will make it easier to center my meals on green. despite the daily eliminations, it still will be fairly easy to get in healthy carbs, protein and fats.
- where does protein come from?
as a meat eater, this was a big question for me. of course, the obvious answer is the same places most vegetarians get their protein from — nuts, beans and vegetables. additionally, this particular program is supplemented with a brown rice protein shake consumed anywhere from 2 – 4 times/day (more during the detoxification phase.) 1 shake has 160 calories and 15 grams of protein.
- aside from the detoxification benefits, is it healthy?
well, in my opinion, yes. for one, i trust my doctors and do not believe they would ever prescribe something that could be detrimental to my health. additionally, even in the elimination and detoxification phases of this program, i will be consuming more than adequate amount of essential vitamins and nutrients. i am going to keep close track of my eats to ensure i am consuming an adequate number of calories for my body (again, weight loss is not a goal with this program.) i have done research and learned that the most common “negative” side effects from traditional detox programs are: dehydration, fatigue, dizziness and nausea. i plan to make a concerted effort to increase my water intake and make sure to fill up on plenty of apples and pears to avoid fatigue and dizziness.
- what if i can’t do it?
while i do believe this program is absolutely manageable, i will not allow it to severely interrupt or disturb my day to day life. i have every intention of following it through, but if i notice unwanted side effects, feel uncomfortable, or frankly just need a spoonful of almond butter on day 6 (or a decaf soy misto), i’m going to do it! this is about progress, not perfection.

so there you have it! i debated mentioning this on the blog seeing as “detox” and “cleanse” can carry such negative and unhealthy connotations, but figured y’all would notice something was up with my eats early next week! i’m also excited to keep tabs on this journey and share my daily meals and reflections. while i’ll be more than ready for a piece of carrot cake and glass of wine by day 11, i’m excited to see how i feel with this new way of eating and cleansing.
do you have any experience with acupuncture or eastern medicine?
thoughts on detox / cleanse programs?

I think my body NEEDs something like this; but I’m not ever open to “detoxes” because I’m already low weight…and I fear that (even if you say it is not intended for weight loss), some weight loss will be inevitable…so…(ironically, I think I’m probably underweight due to issues of an unhealthy body that needs to be detoxified…go figure).
I feel so weak to say this: but i don’t think Id have the willpower. Not sure I could go even ONE day with only grains and veggies,,,,yep, willpower is not my best friend.
Something that I’ve never followed, BUT have heard decent things on are Natasha Turner, ND, books “The Hormone Diet” and “The Supercharged Hormone Diet”..I strongly encourage you to check your library for them. Might be of interest to you at this stage in your life.
I don’t have any experience with a detox or a cleanse but I definitely agree with you about acupuncture. I want a few times last year for some pain and it was really great. I’m always suggesting acupuncture to my friends and family now
I too suffer from female/hormonal problems and have heard how good accupuncture is for you. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the “eastern” side of fertility problems and have found that Vitex helped me. I’m not where I need to be, but I am much better than before. Good luck with everything – I know how emotionally draining this all can be!
thanks for sharing…good luck to you as well
I’m usually not a fan of detox programs, but this one looks pretty good, definitely not too restrictive! Good luck with it, I hope it helps things!
I’m always thinking about ways to make my body more baby friendly far in advance, although we have no plans anytime soon!
I greatly respect what eastern medicine has to offer us and think it’s terrific that you’re looking to an “alternative” approach to your medical issue. I sought out acupuncture treatment once a few years ago for a pain management problem and found it tremendously helpful.
I personally would not engage in a detox/cleanse program, and am not convinced that they are necessary or useful. I already eat a clean plant-based diet, and in view of past experiences, I know that my particlular body just doesn’t respond well to any level of nutrient restriction.
That said, I think you are wise to have researched this program so thoroughly and to have gained the support of your M.D. I especially admire your level-headed commitment to vigilence during the cleanse.
All the best to you, Kathleeen.
thanks, karen! i agree — my diet is pretty good, generally speaking, but i’ve noticed some areas that can use improvement recently. i’m not suggesting this is a necessary road to a healthy lifestyle, just something new i’m’ trying out
I’m excited to hear how it goes. There’s so much negative info out there on detox’s that I’ve been afraid of ever doing one but it sounds like you’re doing it just the right way. I love that your heart is bent toward making your body healthy and ready for pregnancy. Wishing you the absolute best!!
thank you, friend. means a lot
You are a brave woman to give up coffee! I’m kidding, but only a little. I hope you’ll keep us updated on how your detox goes.
I’d be really interested in hearing more about your experience with acupuncture! I heard a lecture from an acupuncturist a month or two ago on nutrition, and it was really terrific. I really want to give acupuncture a try!
it really has changed my life! will do a full post in the near future.
Thanks for sharing Kath
thinking of you lots. I did try a meat/dairy/processed food free diet for a week when trying to figure out what was making me so sick a few years ago… The reintroduction is so important! I did it the total wrong way ( meeting friends for a Friday happy hour half priced apps) and felt awful. May be home in February, see you then! Xo
thanks, love! i’ll need to be careful — my last day is our first night in indy for the Super Bowl. something tells me wine will be involved…
I (stupidly) tried my own detox last summer. I say “stupidly” because I did not consult a health professional, have a plan, and was in the middle of training for a marthon. I just decided to eat only plants (fruits and vegetables, not grains) for a week. I ended up getting really weak (duh, lack of protein) and my training suffered. Nothing I couldn’t bounce back from, but it was definately a learning experience – good nutrition is balnaced nutrition!
What you’re doing sounds completely manageable, and it’s good that you’re in the company of a health professional! Who knows, you might pick up some new healthy habits from it. Despite my disasterous detox, I did get in the habit of eating more veggies than I normally do.
Good luck, and I’m sure you’ll do great!
that’s what i’m hoping for! i don’t want to totally overhaul my diet (i like to think i’m fairly healthy as is), but i could definitely stand to decrease my sugar, artificial sweetener and meat intake.
Very interesting! I am also interested in hearing more about this doctor that you work with – could you email me his/her information if you feel comfortable doing so?
sent you an email this afternoon! let me know if you have any more questions
I think detoxes are a great idea [for anyone!] considering everything that we consume and are exposed to on a daily basis, but I don’t think I could do it
More power to you!!!
This is awesome. We bought a juicer with the intention of doing a detox diet but we had no real plan to follow. I think it is definitely do-able. You’re going to feel AMAZING afterwards I just know it. I’m so impressed by what you are doing to help your body. I’m slightly jealous that you feel like you are at this point in your life to go through all this. Sometime in the coming years I can see myself going through these same steps. Hopefully I’ll still be able to find this blog post in two years.
do you use your juicer? i LOVE mine! a total pain in the butt to clean, but i always feel so healthy when i’m drinking my veg!
That is exactly why it’s gathering dust in the pantry. I’m somewhat of a neat freak/impatient at times and the juicer was both messy and took a lot of patience to clean up. Maybe if I used it more I would get faster at cleaning it up!
some good reads:

That’s awesome! I’m so glad you shared that. My husband literally said to me tonight, I don’t understand when to juice and when to blend. Great timing of this conversation and that article. I’ll share it with him.
I agree with you. So many people think healthy eating, or detox in this case, is all or nothing. It doesn’t have to be and its not “cheating” if you go off track a little. being mostly healthy is better that not at all!
i agree!
Good luck!! I’m excited to hear how it goes!
Can’t believe your blog..! Is this an elimination / do you think you are allergic to a food? Do you have issues with #2? I did accupuncture for the first time last Oct (for my shoulder) and love it! I too have female and #2 issues ( sorry tmi!) that no one can figure out and I’ve been to all kinds of western docs.
all.kinds.
and then I happened upon accupuncture.
This is really interesting – I’m glad you posted about it! I am never quite sure about detox programs, as I am not doing it for weight loss either…just to cleanse my body. I have only ever tried one, which was based on only having freshly made juices and smoothies (using our own juicer) for three days…and I only made it to the first evening before I felt totally out of it and starving. So, I quit and just added juices and smoothies to my regular diet. I would be much more interested in trying this type of detox, though. I’d love to hear what you think!
~Emily~
i don’t think i could ever do a liquid cleanse, regardless of how nutritious or filling the juices/smoothies are — i need some chew!
Haha. I totally agree! I was sooo happy to be eating rather than just drinking…and I only did it for most of ONE day!
I’m happy you are open to other kinds of medicine.
I love hearing about other peoples experiences. Good luck on your journey! I can’t wait to read more about this in the future.
Hi Love! I just read this and I basically had really poor fertility issues for ages (still not totally back to normal…). I found eating lots of butter and saturated fat to be the most helpful (which is sort of why I called my blog Wine and Butter!). It was weird after being such a ‘healthy’ eater for so long … but it was the only thing that helped. Basically following the eating recommendations of the Weston Price Foundation… email me if you’d ever like more details! Those things are STRESSFUL xox
thank, girl! i definitely have upped my fat intake in the past year and seen positive changes. i’ll definitely look into weston price. thanks for all the advice!
Good luck, girl! This seriously looks like the healthiest detox ever. I’m so happy you have such a good medical team. I hope this detox makes your body an ideal place for a baby. <3
