whee! did i have my booty kicked this afternoon, or what?
one of my good friends invited me to a new workout class with her and i, of course, jumped at the opportunity to change things up on the exercise front. is an hour long interval class that combines cardio and strength into one sweaty mess of a workout.
the 60 minutes looked something like this:
- 10 minutes: treadmill (warmup)
- 10 minutes: mat (upper body)
- 10 minutes: treadmill (incline intervals)
- 10 minutes: mat (lower body)
- 10 minutes: treadmill (speed intervals)
- 10 minutes: mat (abs)
treadmill: this was definitely my favorite of the two. the 3 sets of 10 minutes flew by as we were constantly changing speeds and incline. the instructor would yell out three speeds (to accompany all abilities) and from those you chose your baseline. from that point speed and incline would increase and decrease. i covered about one mile in each 10 minutes interval, for a total of 3 miles over the class — not bad! my speeds ranged from 4.0 to 9.0 (for sprints!) and our inclines peaked at 15%! that was certainly a butt kicker.
mat: the mat intervals were challenging as well, but at times, i felt a little rushed and that the ten minutes was not enough time to really feel the burn from the strength exercises. there was little focus on form and more emphasis on speed — which can be a good or bad thing. luckily i feel comfortable with basic strengthening moves (bicep curls, triceps extensions, pushups, squats, etc.), but for a strength training newbie, these parts may be tough. i will say, however, that by the end of those 10 minutes of abs, this girl was feelin’ it.
i came home in the mood for a protein packed dinner and whipped up my favorite spinach feta turkey burgers. i combined about 4 ounces of ground turkey breast with frozen spinach, garlic, an egg white and oregan. 2 patties were formed (because more burgers is always better) and mustard was my dipper of choice. i topped my burgers with mozzarella for an added layer of flavor.
for tonight’s veg, we had a mix of roasted brussels sprouts and mushrooms. simple + nutritious.
a little a while later, feeling extra snacky, i baked up an especially delicious sweet potato. over brunch saturday morning, was talking about her sweet potato obsession and it dawned on me that it had been weeks since i’d had one!
topped with cinnamon spiked greek yogurt and a drizzle of maple syrup – perfection! welcome back sweet potatoes, i missed you. this guy was literally the size of my head and left me stuffed to the brim. of course not too stuffed to enjoy an after dinner piece of chocolate and small bowl of vanilla ice cream, though.
and with a full belly, i’m out! it’s fantasy suite night on the bachelor.
do you enjoy group exercise classes or are you a solo worker-outer?
i love workout classes, but often times it’s tough to justify the cost! my class today was a whopping $24. definitely not in our budget at this time, but fun to try once!
